The Media & Business Contracts Handbook. 4th edition by Deborah Fosbrook and Adrian C Laing
How to Read a publishing contract
So I finally got his brilliant novel published. Congratulations! You could be so happy with this achievement that he is willing to sign anything. However, this is a mistake. Never sign anything when you drink champagne to celebrate. You will need your mind at the touch of depth review the contract and make sure that the publisher is being fair to you. A contract is legally binding! Whatever your complaint, if you signed a contract then according to the United States, is 100% satisfied with your publishing company.
The most important consideration is what the editor expects of you as a writer. Usually, an editor even offered a contract unless the story in general, meets your needs. However, the company can expect the writer to do some rewrites. In the case of a writer-for the stage in installments, then the terms must be clear as to what type of material that the writer is expected to write, what style will be delivered, no promise how much rewriting and payment is expected.
Other considerations include whether or not a line author is given, and if the author has the right to remove your byline, if there is a disagreement. Speaking of disagreements, how will they be handled? Does the author have reached with the approval of the final copy? Before the final copy is printed, usually the authors send "galley" to read more and apply any changes. However, you should ask if you have the right to request changes of substance as well as proofreading errors. It is not impossible that the publisher will want to change a part of the plot or specific points in the book that will alter the original vision. In fact, it is quite common in the publication. Will you be able to work in this way and re-enter the changes yourself? If you insist on no change, in this case could have to part company and start fresh.
He is with a variety of "rights" in negotiating the contract. The friendly publishing contract is probably "First North American Rights standard. "This type of contract guarantees only that the editor can facilitate the exclusive book and repeatedly for a limited period of time. They could also confront the problems of the material is reproduced for serialization, television and even movies. Do not be so generous with these rights. You risk making a pile of money as the right holder if the manuscript should be produced for the screen. Some publishing companies can require 50% or more of all benefits in the case of a film adaptation. Be weary about signing a contract that gives total power to the publisher.
The rights issue will also address a concern. While the technology is currently growing in the coming years, publishing electronics could take off and turn the middle of everything. As a writer who knows try to ensure that (a) the electronic publishing rights are limited to a period reasonable, (b) you get a fair share of the income of all online sales (some have suggested up to 50% of income is acceptable because this is different from publishing rights), and (c) obtained some benefit from the results, in addition to direct online sales.
Finally, remember that you will be looking to license your work in any medium, not to sign away all rights, even if it's for a good reward.
